Camper trailer finance

A camper trailer is the cheapest way into touring, and the finance is simple. We compare the panel and show what it actually costs over the term.

Personal finance products are regulated consumer credit under the National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009. Lyft Capital Pty Ltd (Australian Credit Licence 541052) acts as a credit assistance provider, not a lender. Approval is subject to the lender’s responsible lending assessment. Comparison rates are based on a $30,000 loan over 5 years unless stated; different amounts and terms produce different comparison rates. Fees, charges, terms and conditions apply.

What is camper trailer finance?

Camper trailer finance is a consumer loan used to buy a soft-floor, hard-floor, forward-fold or hybrid camper trailer, secured against the trailer. It is regulated consumer credit in Australia, so the lender must verify your circumstances and disclose the rate, fees and total repayments upfront.

Camper trailers occupy the ground between a tent and a caravan. Soft-floor and forward-fold campers are light, tow easily behind a mid-size four-wheel drive and cost far less than a van. Hybrids sit at the top of the category with hard walls, internal beds and full off-grid systems, and their prices now overlap with entry-level caravans, which is worth thinking about before you buy.

Financing is simple regulated consumer credit secured against the trailer. The amounts are modest, so pay attention to fees relative to the loan size and choose a term that does not stretch far beyond how long you realistically plan to keep it. Your broker will present the comparison rate and total repayments across the panel so you can see the real cost rather than a weekly headline figure.

How lenders assess camper trailer finance

Camper trailers are modest-value consumer assets that hold value reasonably well. Lower-priced soft-floor campers can fall below some lenders’ minimum loan amounts. Hybrid campers, which sit between a camper and a caravan in price and capability, are treated much like caravans. Age limits typically require the trailer to be under 15 years at the end of the term. Private sales need a PPSR check and payment to the registered owner. As consumer credit, income and expense verification applies to every application.

Before you buy

  • Set up and pack down the camper before you buy — a design that takes forty minutes will stop you using it for one-night stops.
  • Check the suspension, coupling and chassis if you intend to tour off road; a road-spec camper will not survive corrugations.
  • Confirm water, battery and solar capacity against how you actually camp, since retrofitting these later is expensive.

Key terms

What is camper trailer finance?

Camper trailer finance is a consumer loan secured against a camper trailer. Terms usually run 24 to 72 months, the loan is regulated under Australian consumer credit law, and rates are generally lower than unsecured personal lending because the trailer is security.

What is a hybrid camper?

A hybrid camper is a camper trailer with hard walls and an internal sleeping area, combining a caravan’s weather protection with a camper’s off-road capability and smaller footprint. Hybrids are heavier and more expensive than fold-out campers and are financed much like caravans.
